2.Nobel Prize cannot be awarded posthumously

A Nobel Prize cannot be awarded posthumously but Canadian immunologist Ralph M. Steinman was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2011 for medicine after he passed away. This was because of the secrecy and the strict rules that the selection committee adheres to. Ralph M. Steinman was suffering from pancreatic cancer and was dying but because the process had to be kept a secret the committee could not keep calling to check his state of health. Ralph M. Steinman passed away just three days prior to the announcement of the prize but he was still awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine because when the selection committee decided on his name he was still alive. This rule came into force from 1974. Before 1974 the Nobel Prize was awarded posthumously only twice – to Dag Hammarskjöld (Nobel Peace Prize in 1961) and Erik Axel Karlfeldt (Nobel Prize in Literature 1931).

Jean Paul-Sartre and Le Duc Tho declined their Nobel Prizes. Jean Paul-Sartre was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1964 and declined it on the grounds that he had consistently declined all official honours and rewards. Le Duc Tho and US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger were awarded the Peace Prize in 1973 for negotiating the Vietnam peace accord. However, Le Duc Tho declined it citing Vietnam's situation as his primary reason. However, once you get the call you become a Nobel Laureate since the decision of the prize can't be revoked. The committee doesn't offer the prize, they tell you, so even if you decline to accept the prize you still become a Nobel Laureate.

4.Forced to decline the Nobel Prize

Richard Kuhn, Adolf Butenandt and Gerhard Domagk were forced by authorities to decline the Nobel Prize, so was Boris Pasternak. During World War II, Adolf Hitler forced Richard Kuhn, Adolf Butenandt and Gerhard Domagk to decline the Nobel Prize. They did eventually get their medals and diploma but could not procure the prize money as that can be claimed only within the year. Boris Pasternak, on the other hand, won the Nobel Prize in 1958 but was forced by the Soviet Union to decline the Prize.

Their daughter Irène Joliot-Curie along with her husband Frédéric Joliot was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in the year 1935. Jan Tinbergen-Nikolaas Tinbergen is the only brothers who have won Nobel Prizes.

7.Prize Money

Alfred Noble had left most of his estate to be converted into a fund for the Nobel awards. As of 2017, the Nobel Prize amount is set at Swedish kronor (SEK) 9.0 million per full Nobel Prize. In case a Nobel Prize is shared the committee can either divide the prize money equally (if there are two winners) or if there are three recipients then the money can be divided equally between the three or one-half to one winner and the other half equally between the other two. The 9 million Swedish Kronor prize money will be Rs. 72,227,297.37 (Rs. Seven crore twenty-two lakh twenty-seven thousand two hundred and ninety-seven and thirty-seven paise) in Indian currency.
